Be Course Ready on Canvas

As we approach the start of the new academic year, here is a handy checklist to make sure the Canvas course for your module is ready to go live!

  • Have you edited the course home page with details relevant to your module?

The home page is the first impression students will have of your course. Create an introductory message or video for your students and use this space to tell them how to navigate your course content and the tools you will use to communicate with them.
  • Have you uploaded your teaching content into a logical and easy to navigate order?

You could design your content using a weekly or topic structure depending on which is most appropriate for your module. Further guidance can be found in the Canvas Orientation course. Remember to publish any content you want your students to be able to view.

  • Have you created a welcome note using the announcement feature?

You can use course announcements to update your students on important news and course activities.

  • Is your content accessible for all students?

Ally, an integrated accessibility tool, checks the level of accessibility of your uploaded content and displays a handy accessibility indicator and provides inline guidance on how to improve any issues. Students can also download alternative versions of your content. Further information can be found in the Ally FAQs.

  • Have you viewed your course as a student?

The Student View feature will give you a student’s perspective of your course. Please note this feature won’t display third party integrations, e.g. Library Reading List, ReCap and Turnitin, but will give you a useful insight into how students will see your course content.

  • Now publish your course!

Publish your course so that your students can access it and interact with the content. Remember individual items or modules of content will also need to be published in your course.

Remember, to use the Canvas 24/7 support, accessed from the Help menu once you are logged in to the platform, for any of your 'How Do I?' Canvas questions.
