Malicious Software
What is malicious software?
Malicious software (e.g. ransomware, spyware, botnets, etc.) can destroy your work, steal your personal information, disrupt your access to ICT services, and force your device to participate in DDoS (Denial of Service Attacks) against other web services.
How is malicious software spread?
Malicious software is often spread through email attachments, compromised websites, compromised software installers, and portable storage devices. Criminals will also attempt to trick you into installing malicious software, often during a fraudulent "tech-support" telephone call.
How do I protect myself?
If you are using your own computer, tablet, or smartphone:
- Install the latest security updates for your operating system and applications.
- Do not use devices or software if they are no longer in receipt of security updates.
- Install anti-malware software and keep it up to date.
- Run regular system scans for malicious software (e.g. daily quick scans, and weekly full scans).
- Scan all email attachments, removable media, and files downloaded off the Internet for malicious software.
- Do not download or install any software from an unknown or un-trusted source.
- Carefully read all web browser warning messages.
- Setup a personal firewall.
- Politely hang-up on all telephone callers claiming to be from "tech-support".
