Hyperlinks

Web addresses and URLs need to be handled differently depending on whether they are given in printed or electronic information.

For material published in print URLs need to be expanded in full e.g. my.ncl.ac.uk/students. Printed URLs will be easier to read if they are not underlined.

For electronic documents it is more useful to insert clickable hyperlinks that have meaningful names eg Student Home Page.

Blind users working with screen readers will particularly benefit from links which have meaningful names (rather than Click Here). Most screen readers are able to extract the links shown on the page, and, if the links are meaningful this provides a fast way of navigating to that link.
