Text Alignment
We recommend that paragraphs are 'left aligned' rather than fully justified, centred or right aligned.
Fully justified text presents particular difficulties for readers with dyslexia or visual impairments:
- The additional spaces used to line up the right margin create 'rivers' of white space
- A larger number of hyphenated words are created
- The even right hand margin makes it easier to lose your place when moving from one line to the next.
Techniques
The default in Microsoft Word is for paragraphs to be left aligned text.
The following shortcut keys can be used to change alignment:
- Left Align: ctrl+l
- Right Align: ctrl+r
- Centre: ctrl+e
