Reporting Tools

The  Desktop PC estate is the single biggest contributor to ICT energy consumption in the University. ICT is responsible for 18% of the total electricity bill and the desktop estate is responsible for 37% of that consumption.

To support the University in addressing this energy consumption a reporting tool has been deployed.  Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2016 contains advanced power reporting.  SCCM uses software agents to report the energy consumption of each PC,  those details are aggregated into a reporting system. This enables schools to see the energy consumption for their part of the PC estate. This agent is now part of the default common desktop build, we now have the ability to monitor the power consumption of the entire PC estate.

The power reports from SCCM are accessible via a web browser. Computing officers and Environmental coordinators should have access to the tool but in the event that it's not accessible or if there are any further queries then please contact the IT Service Desk via https://nuservice.ncl.ac.uk

Baseline power-saving scripts have also been developed as a good first step to introducing power saving to the parts of the desktop estate.  These scripts are available to IT Service colleagues on campus and can be deployed via a policy.  The scripts are deliberately conservative in when they will hibernate PCs,  schools may well wish to alter the scripts so power saving is triggered at lower thresholds. With this in mind, the scripts have been developed so that they are easily understood and edited.  The policy to apply these is "NUIT PowerSave v3 Template" and the scripts are contained within \\campus\software\central\GenericPowerSaveW7v3 along with a Readme explaining their use.
