Wireless Scheme
We have a campus wide wireless scheme that provides a secure method of accessing the campus network. Anyone wanting to install wireless on campus must join this scheme to maintain the security of the campus network.
You must buy the equiptment, recommended by the IT Service, which can be maintained centrally. We will ...
- come to your school and help you scan the areas you want to cover with wireless to determine the location and number of access points needed and also note any cabling requirements,
- either provide you with access points from stock, which can be paid for with an Internal Purchasing Requisition form, or the information you need to get quotes from our recommended equipment suppliers,
- configure and manage the wireless access points and the network switches within your school to provide wireless service,
- cover the cost of maintenance under the campus network agreement we take out each year,
You will need an access point and a power injector per location. Once you have the equipment we will configure and install it for you.
Note: the access points must be plugged into structured cabling, they can not go into a shared hub, and buildings still using the old coax network will have to wait or extra cabling will have to be installed. Any cabling work involved will be charged in the usual way.
If you already have your own wireless access points then it may eventually be possible to use them with the magpie scheme, however it is more likely we will ask for the devices be removed. The reason the scheme works well is because all access points are configured in the same way and can be automatically maintained and monitored centrally. Introducing other types of access points makes running the service much more difficult. Please contact the IT Service Desk for more information.
