Smartcards
Your new Student Portal - https://studentportal.ncl.ac.uk/
A new and improved one-stop mobile responsive Student Portal replaces S3P (Student Self-Service Portal) and the Newcastle App.
- We recommend you uninstall the Newcastle App as it will no longer provide the information you need.
- Create a shortcut to the new Student Portal to add to your mobile or desktop home screen for quick future access.
- Find out more (https://www.ncl.ac.uk/students/student-portal/) and watch a demo video about the new Student Portal.
All University students and colleagues are required to carry a University Smartcard which is issued when you begin your course or contract.
How to get your Smartcard
New Students
To produce your smartcard we need you to upload a photograph of yourself via the Student Portal.
Please complete your online registration in the Student Portal. You will then be directed to the Final Registration process in the portal where you can upload your photograph.
Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the Portal to upload your photograph. The photograph should be of good quality and a true likeness of yourself. It will be displayed on your smartcard which you may be required to show as identification to prove your student status.
If you studied with us last year and already have a smartcard you do not need to upload a new photograph. We will use your existing photograph for your new card.
Where to collect your smartcard
Several student registration events are held each year where smartcards are issued from a central location.
At all other times students can obtain a smartcard from:
- Student Services (Great North House, Level 1)
- The University Library - Smartcard issuing hours are during Library Help Desk Services in the Philip Robinson Library and between 9am and 5pm in the Walton Library.
New staff
New members of staff can request their first smartcard and upload their photograph using the form. The University Library will process your request and email your @newcastle.ac.uk account to let you know when your new smartcard is ready for collection. You can choose to collect from the Philip Robinson Library or Walton Library.
Smartcard Access
Your Smartcard allows access to the following University services:
- The University Library
- Printing and photocopying
- 24 hour Computer Clusters
- The Centre for Physical Recreation & Sport (fee payable)
- Language Resource Centre
Your Smartcard also gives you access to buildings, rooms and facilities on campus, as appropriate to the requirements of your job or course. Please see Smartcard Access into buildings and rooms for more details and contact information for buildings' access control managers around the campus.
