Smartcard Categories and Statuses
Staff
Issued to all full-time and part-time members of University staff who are paid directly by Newcastle University.
Allows automatic access to the University libraries (Philip Robinson, Walton, Law and Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms) and the computing clusters (including 24-hour clusters) around campus.
Associate Staff
Issued to members of staff who are not paid directly by the University (such as visiting lecturers and visiting researchers) or colleagues on zero-hour contracts.
Allows automatic access to the University libraries (Philip Robinson, Walton, Law and Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms) and the computing clusters (including 24-hour clusters) around campus.
Postgraduate Student
Issued to students working towards a higher degree award.
Allows automatic access to the University libraries (Philip Robinson, Walton, Law and Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms) and the computing clusters (including 24-hour clusters) around campus.
Undergraduate Student
Issued to students working towards a degree award and those studying an integrated masters.
Allows automatic access to the University libraries (Philip Robinson, Walton, Law and Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms) and the computing clusters (including 24-hour clusters) around campus.
Community
Issued as a University Library membership smartcard to alumni of Newcastle University as well as a range of reciprocal and corporate partners and individuals. For more information on these schemes and how to apply, please see www.ncl.ac.uk/library/in-the-community/joining-the-library.
Consultation smartcards (reference-only membership) are also available on application.
Access (including NHS access)
Issued to users of University facilities who are not employed by or studying at Newcastle University for access to spaces on campus.
NHS staff who need access to the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Campus of Ageing and Vitality (CAV) and Centre for Life (CFL) should apply for an Access/NHS smartcard online via the online registration form.
Other types of Access smartcard are available for fee-paying members of the Sports Centre, fee-paying patrons of the University car parking facilities or contractors working on campus.
