Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a simple way to make your University login more secure and keep your personal information safe. It requires an extra step when you log in to some online services. This may be a mobile app notification or a code; just like online banking.

How to register
  • Go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup
  • Log in using userid@newcastle.ac.uk
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to set up MFA. It's best to use a separate phone and laptop/tablet whilst following the process as you will need to scan a QR code.

Please note

If you are prompted to Add a Sign in Method for Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator or Security Key please do not select either of these options.

We recommend you use Microsoft Authenticator as your primary approve sign in request and add an additional authentication such as text or call, please see Microsoft's guide explaining how to do this https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/change-your-two-step-verification-method-and-settings-c801d5ad-e0fc-4711-94d5-33ad5d4630f7 .

What do I need to do?

All University accounts must be registered for MFA to access some online services. You only need to register once, it takes 5-10 minutes. New students are automatically registered for MFA when they join the University and register for their course.

Once you have completed your registration please keep the Microsoft Authenticator app on your device, as you will need it when you want to access University services.
