Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a simple way to make your University login more secure and keep your personal information safe. It requires an extra step when you log in to some online services. This may be a mobile app notification or a code; just like online banking.

How to register

It's best to use a separate phone and laptop/tablet whilst following the process.

What do I need to do?

All University accounts must be registered for MFA to access some online services. You only need to register once, it takes 5-10 minutes. New students are automatically registered for MFA when they join the University and register for their course.

Once you have completed your registration please keep the Microsoft Authenticator app on your device, as you will need it when you want to access University services.

How to get help

Follow the step-by-step instructions to register for MFA.

If you need further support, please contact the IT Service Desk.

(It's best to call using a different phone than the one you're trying to register with.)

What should I do if I lose my phone at home or abroad?

See the advice on getting in touch if you've lost your device.

Changes to MFA February 2023

Newcastle University users of the Microsoft Authenticator app for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) will see a difference in the way the app requests approval from 27 February 2023.

Microsoft are introducing new features to improve the security of the notification process:

  • A unique number will be displayed on the application you’re trying to log into (on your PC) which is then entered into the authenticator app
